Sexual and reproductive health is a broad area that overlaps across many aspects of healthcare. It also impacts upon older and younger patients as well as males and females. These factors combined make it likely to be one of the reasons that most of us will visit a GP at some time in our lives.
Some of the more common reasons for visiting your GP in respect of sexual and reproductive health include the following:
- Contraception Advice and Prescriptions
- Sexual Health Advice
- Cervical Screening Tests
- Mirena® Removal and Insertion
- Implanon® Removal and Insertion
- STI testing
- Family planning
- Maternal health
This list is not exhaustive and often patients attend for other reasons and are just looking to discuss their concerns with a professional in a confidential and respectful setting.
Our doctors at Kelvale Medical Group are all experienced in handling consultations regarding sexual and reproductive health with some offering specialised services in this area.
These specialised services have been set out on this page and/or on our dedicated Pregnancy & Obstetrics page which can be found at the link below.
So please book an online appointment today or contact our friendly reception team on (08) 9495 1230 to arrange for a consultation.
Contraception
Mirena®:
The Mirena® is a small T shaped intrauterine device (IUD) used for contraceptive purposes but has also been known to help abnormal period bleeding and pain.
The Mirena® is placed into the uterus by a trained GP during your consult in one of Kelvale’s well equipped treatment rooms. The placement is non-surgical procedure and only takes a few minutes. The Mirena® can remain effective for up to 5 years and subsequent removal can also be performed onsite at Kelvale’s premises.
Contraception
Implanon®:
The Implanon® is a soft plastic rod about 4cm long and is inserted under the skin of the inner upper arm via a short procedure that uses local anaesthetic.
This contraceptive implant slowly releases a hormone, progestogen, into the body. The Implanon® can remain effective for up to three years and subsequent removal can also be performed onsite at Kelvale’s premises.
Please Note:
With all of our contraceptive procedures we require an initial consultation to make sure that any planned procedure is the most appropriate for the patient. You can book your initial consultation via our friendly reception team at the number above and details of our fees for the above procedures can be found on our fees page.
New Pap Smear:
More accurate. Less often.
From 1 December 2017, cervical screening will change in Australia. The Pap test will be replaced with a new Cervical Screening Test every five years.
Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers. The new Cervical Screening Test is expected to protect up to 30% more women. The test is a simple procedure to check the health of your cervix. It looks and feels the same as the Pap test, but tests for the human papillomavirus (known as HPV).
Your first Cervical Screening Test is due two years after your last Pap test. After that, you will only need to have the test every five years if your results are normal. Regular cervical screening is your best protection against cervical cancer.
If you are due for testing, contact Kelvale to book an appointment. For more information about the National Cervical Screening Program call 13 15 56.
