What is COVID-19?
Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses that can cause illness. Human coronavirus illnesses are generally mild, such as the common cold.
This new coronavirus originated in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China in December 2019 and the disease caused by the virus is named COVID-19.
It is a new strain of coronaviruses that hasn’t previously been identified in humans.

What are the symptoms?
The symptoms of COVID-19 are similar to other colds and flus and include:
- fever
- sore throat
- cough
- tiredness
- difficulty breathing
While coronavirus is of concern, it is important to remember that most people displaying these symptoms are likely suffering with a cold or other respiratory illness – not coronavirus.

Who is at risk?
Some people are more at risk:
- the elderly
- people with chronic disease such as diabetes
- smokers and people with lung disease such as asthma and COPD
- people on immunosuppressant treatment

What to do?
You should:
- stay at home if you are unwell
- practise social distancing
- avoid gatherings
- wash your hands often with soap and water, or hand sanitiser
- cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or use your inner elbow
- if you have arrived from interstate or overseas, you will need to self isolate for 14 days

Who should attend?
Up-to-date and detailed information about the testing criteria and who should attend is available at the HealthyWA Website.
Note: testing at public COVID-19 clinics (metropolitan and regional) is FREE.
Who should avoid?
DO NOT ATTEND unless you have symptoms.
People presenting at COVID clinics may be infectious.
